Who Is Gordon Whitney?
Gordon Whitney was born in Lillooet in 1925. As told in his book, “Boyhood Memories of a Cariboo Town: Lillooet Stories” Gordon’s family struggled in the 1930s. Despite these challenges, young Gordon excelled as a student in Lillooet’s one-room schoolhouse. When his family moved to New Westminster in 1939, he never forgot his childhood experiences or the breathtaking beauty of Lillooet’s landscape. Gordon married and became a school teacher in 1955 in Vancouver; his favourite hobby was drawing and painting. When he retired in 1984, he studied Fine Arts full-time at Langara College. Gordon passed away in September 2023, three months before his 98th birthday. Learn more about Gordon Whitney here.
